The wrong customer costs more than no customer.
The most expensive unpaid invoice is the one you could have refused before signing. Before the keys, Backlane verifies the driver and the company. After the keys, it never stops.
You are always the one who refuses: the agent builds the case, it does not sentence.
We collect once. The file works for years.
The point of a verified file is not ticking a box at signature: it is that the document collected that day answers, on its own, the four questions that come later. Without it, each one costs a phone call and two days.
The document enters the file
Licence, ID, proof of address, company registration number. Read, filed against the right driver, with their expiry dates. An unreadable document says "unreadable", it does not say "refused".
It gates the keys
A vehicle does not leave if the file is incomplete. That is not administrative friction: it is the only way not to discover an expired licence on the day of a roadside check.
It names the driver
The forty-five day legal window leaves no time to hunt for a photocopy. The file answers "who was driving" without anyone being asked.
It is already there
When the driver declares from the roadside, the insurer receives a complete file the same day, not in ten days. A fast declaration takes a smaller haircut.
It settles the account
Deposit, damage found, final mileage: the file holds the starting documents, so the comparison is factual and the dispute short.
It is also why verification is not sold separately: it is only worth something wired into the rest. A standalone identity-check service hands you a verdict; here the document stays in the file and serves four times.
What exactly do you verify on a driver?
The documents in their file: licence, identity, whatever your intake journey requires. Reading is automatic, the final decision is yours, and every rejection reason is explicit.
And on a company?
Its existence and consistency against the official registry (company number, legal name). Matching is deliberately conservative: when in doubt, the file comes back to you rather than validating a wrong company.
Does it slow down customer onboarding?
No: verification runs while the file is being built, in parallel with intake. It only blocks what deserves to be blocked.
No commitment. Nothing changes with your current tools or insurer.
